Sperm Health

Statistically 1 in 6 couples have difficulty trying to fall pregnant. The male factor represents approximately 40% of the reason some couples have difficulty conceiving.

Unlike women, men are constantly producing sex cells. While a woman is born with all the eggs she'll ever have, men produce sperm on a continual basis. Therefore, what a man does on a daily basis can affect the sperm maturation process.

Smoking, drinking, stress, poor nutrition, and lack of exercise all can contribute to poor sperm quality. Plus, a man's sperm health and sperm quality begins to decline around the age of 25. However, improving your sperm health is possible.

There are a number of lifestyle factors that affect sperm, which include:

  • Obesity – obesity may affect the sperm by either altering the effectiveness of sex hormones or simply overheating your testicles. Testicles are meant to be 2-3C less than core body temperate and being overweight affects that.
  • Sitting down too much – Sitting at work all day or at home can overheat your testicles too.
  • Stress – Chronic stress has been shown to reduce sperm quality. Some researchers believe that because men are working more than ever before that this is a cause of sperm decline.
  • Diet – A poor diet especially excessive caffeine intake can have a dramatic affect on quality.
  • Cigarettes – Smoking by men has been associated with markedly reduced fertility rates.
  • Lubricants – Personal lubricants, especially petroleum based lubricants, may impede healthy sperm. If you are trying to conceive, look for sperm-friendly lubricants such as Maybe Baby Sperm Friendly Gel.
  • Mobile phones – While it hasn't been definitely proven, radiation from mobile phones may affect sperm, if you're trying to conceive it may be a good idea not to carry your mobile in your pants pocket.
